Well kids… I survived senior trip. Here’s a review of what all went down… from my point-of-view, of course.
15 hours on the bus. I slept for maybe the first hour and couldn’t get back to sleep… so I read the first book of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and accidentally finished it before we’d gone completely through Pennsylvania. I have mixed thoughts on it… funny on the surface, but deep down I was kind of sad because lots of people really don’t find a meaning to life, even though they’ve spent so much time searching all over for it.
I spent some time working on my story and finally got some gum… but it wasn’t the flavour I wanted, so that was a little disappointing.
Between reading and writing, I called Mike and talked to him for a very few minutes… but it was a lost cause at the time because he was talking to somebody else and Paige S decided to com and chat with me while I was on the phone… and 20-something other people were all talking at once on the bus, so it was very distracting and I gave up talking to him. We sat in a lot of traffic that day…
Then towards evening we kept seeing signs for Nagshead, so we were getting all excited to get off the bus… and I figured I’d call Melody and talk to her a while. It ended up being about a half an hour because we weren’t as close to our destination as we thought we were… but it was okay because I got to talk to Melody and adjust some vacation plans and tell her that I’d added onto my story. JD and Sarah were sitting on the bench behind me and thought I was talking to myself… so that was pretty funny, seeing as it was the most I’d talked the whole day.
Then we got to the houses, and they were really cool and huge… and we all got our stuff in and put away and I took a shower. Then the power in part of the house went out… so it was weird… I think it went out while Ali was finishing her turn showering and all… but at least I’d brought my flashlight with me so that helped some. The power was fixed for a while after that, but then went out again and I think we all just left it at that and went to bed because it was still out the next morning… but it was eventually fixed, so that’s good.
Bacon and cereal for breakfast… then after that we left and went to an outlet mall… that wasn’t really that great. I didn’t get anything. Then we went to lunch and got sandwiches… and I thought mine was really good, so that’s that. I didn’t finish all of it, but I saved half and out it in the fridge… a bunch of people did that, including Mr Fox… but I’ll tell about that later.
Then we went back to the houses and went to the beach… I really didn’t want to go because I don’t like sand and I don’t like water… but Ali, Paige S, and Sarah convinced me that I needed to go, so I went. And we walked for forever down to the public access (not knowing that had we walked the other direction that there was another one that was a lot closer). And after that we had to walk for forever down the beach to get to where our class was… and let me say this: that was not a pleasant walk! See, I’d only brought my shoes that I always wear, and I love my shoes so I didn’t want them to get all wet and sandy, so I took them off and walked barefoot. Some places on the beach it was okay to do that, but then other places were really rocky and covered with bits of broken shell, and that was really painful to walk over, but I did it anyway.
So, when we finally got to where our people were we heard about what all happened to Ben and Brad… if you want any details, you should probably ask them about it. They both ended up at the hospital for a while though, and then came back to the houses sometime in the evening… we were all really glad that they were okay after it, even though it took a while for word to get to all of the class that anything had even happened to them.
Then after that we all went back to the houses and kind of stayed there most of the afternoon because we were all kind of… shocked, I guess and just felt that staying “home” would be best. We did go out for pizza after Brad and Ben got back and they seemed pretty okay and all… skipped out on bowling and went back to the houses and rehearsed for the church service the next day. I guess they watched movies over at the guys’ house after that, but I didn’t stick around for it… I went back to our house and cleaned up me and Ali’s room and worked on my story a little more… then I think I took a shower and went to bed.
I missed breakfast because we left earlier for the church than I’d thought we would… but it was okay because I got a juice packet and granola bars that I ate on the way there. So when we got to the church we were introduced to the people who were in charge of all the work we’d be doing, and we all got put into groups so that we could go start on all that… JD, Aaron, Joe, and I helped clean and rearrange a very dirty and kind of outdated church library, and it looked a little better and a little cleaner when we were done… but it was still about all we could do to just exchange weird looks and try really hard to sound like we agreed with the church lady when she said it looked “fantastic”.
Then we all went to have lunch and all… and then worked a little more at some odds and ends that were left over from all the different chores we were assigned to. Then we practiced the skits and the music people tried to get the sound system to do what all they wanted… and we were all freaking out because nobody was remembering lines and the sound wasn’t coming out the way the music people wanted it to… so we prayed and went back to the houses to change and stuff.
And we all scattered for a bit, then changed into our nicer clothes and got together to pray and then went back to the church. The church made dinner for us, so we all had hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken patties and other assorted cookout-type foods… and then we had to go do the service.
The pastor got up and prayed and read a whole chapter of Proverbs to us (maybe this is just how Southern Baptists work… like how Pentecostals speak in tongues and are really loud at their services… anyway, it was new to me) and Mrs Jones got up after that and introduced out music people. Poor Mrs Jones… she wasn’t thinking about it when she got up, and I guess not many people caught it at all, but the first thing she said was along the lines of “hello, is everybody still awake?”. I found it very funny… just like I’d found the expressions on my classmates’ faces very funny while they were up there and the pastor was reading to us… but at least I was able to contain my laughter ^_^
So the kids who were playing started that up… and somehow, God fixed up pretty much all of our problems. The sound was really good compared to what it had been while they’d practiced, and the skits went okay… the “Bottle O’ Love” one got a little messed up, but the “Romeo and Juliet and Jesus” one went really well… it was really funny because I think that the other half of our class was laughing more at the skits than the church people, but it’s all good ^_^
Then the music kids got up again and we all sang some hymns… and I only knew one of them, so I just listened and followed along in the hymnal (that was also new to me because we don’t do those at my church or anywhere else I’ve ever been). And after that, JD decided that we all needed to introduce ourselves and tell about what colleges we all planned on going to and why… so we did and parts of that were funny because some of my classmates were cracking jokes and making up stuff and then going back and telling who they really were and what they were really planning on doing… and then JD tried to close and dismiss everybody because he forgot I was sharing.
But yeah… so I went and shared my testimony… and I guess it went okay, even though looking back on it I know that I kind of didn’t explain some things and some things that I mentioned I didn’t really string together very well and all. But the main point of my testimony was that God could use anything He wants to get into your life and to draw you closer to Him… so I know that if He wanted to use what I said to touch anyone else’s life, then He’ll do it whether I made sense or not. I was pretty nervous though… so I had to keep saying things that would kind of make people laugh so that I could stop talking for a while and get back on track with what I was saying. All in all I think the whole service went pretty well. And then we went home and hung out and I think I called my mommy… and Stacy. I had to call Stacy because these crazy kids were sending me text messages and stuff and I was trying to find out who they were… and it ended up being some kids who I don’t know that got my number from somebody else that I don’t know… and it was making me mad because those kids were a bunch of idiots on top of it and I still don’t know how they got my number… but that’s that. I think I went upstairs and hung out with Mrs Jones, Conner, Mrs Nasby and Lenna for a while… so that was fun since Lenna and Conner liked me, and I guess Lenna doesn’t like a lot of people. Then shower and bedtime.
I think this was the morning when the smoke-detector started going off randomly… dunno how it got fixed, but it wasn’t much fun to wake up to.
Anyways… had breakfast… cereal and juice. Then since I was upstairs and there was still a good chunk of time before we were leaving, I stayed and played with Lenna and Conner. Poor Conner tipped a chair over that he’d been standing in and hit his head on the wall… he had a bruise, but he was okay otherwise…
Then we all left to go to this lighthouse thing, but we didn’t stay long because the actual lighthouse was closed and there wasn’t much else to do there. After that we went to this state park that was kind of like the Sleepy Bear Sand Dune in Michigan that my family goes to every year… but since I still didn’t want sand in my shoes, I stayed down at the bottom of the dune and took a walk with Mrs Jones, her mom, and the little kids. That was pretty fun, although Lenna got in trouble for throwing sand… but that’s that.
Then we had lunch at McDonalds… and some kids got into trouble for leaving and walking someplace else that we would be going to later where they bought shirts that said something that could be taken pretty bad… then later we went to go to this boat tour. It was pretty neat… saw lots of pelicans everywhere and got to be kind of out on the ocean and all… everyone got really wet and cold and blown around on the way back, but it was still nice. After that we went back to the houses and hung out for a bit, and then left for dinner… dinner wasn’t really that great. It was someplace different than where we’d planned on going originally (because of the whole bad t-shirt thing), and the restaurant was really a pain because they didn’t really seem to want to seat and cook for such a big group, and their dinnerware wasn’t all that clean… but we lived through it and most of us even ate there. Then we went back to the houses and I called Melody, but she wasn’t home… so then I called Mike and talked to him for a good while and then took a shower and went to bed.
Wow… I was awoken at 1 something in the AM because a fight broke out and some people were screaming at each other… it was awkward and I tried hard to act like I was still asleep because I kind of wanted them to go fight somewhere else so that I wouldn’t be hearing about it since I’m sure that they didn’t really want their argument broadcast to everyone… and they did eventually go away and I’m not sure how everything went down, but I hope things are kind of okay at least because I always feel bad when other people end up crying over something
And after that I went to sleep and woke up later… couldn’t eat upstairs because some of the adults were helping the other girls to try and sort out their argument… and I didn’t feel like I should stick around, so I had my cereal and granola bar downstairs and listened to my headphones a while. Both of the girls who were fighting apologized for waking me up… which was kind of weird because I hadn’t really cared… I was just kind of worried that they were fighting at all because I had a dream about it after I fell asleep again and I felt really bad because the one of them was still really upset in my dream and I didn’t know what to do about it… which is why I asked her a couple of times that day how she was doing… but she said she was pretty much okay, which I hope is true because even though I don’t really know her that well, I still hate it when people are really hurt about something.
Then later that morning we went out to the aquarium and looked at all the fishies and sea animals and things, so that was really cool… and then we came back and went to Sonic for lunch. Ordering there is weird… but it was cold out, so we didn’t stay (because you have to sit outside). Instead, we took our food back to the guys’ house and ate there. I was kind of mad because even after I made a big deal out of telling them not to put mustard on my sandwich, they did anyway, so grr!
Then after hanging out there a bit, we all left to go to this place and ride go-karts (except for Amber and Angela… they were tired of eating fast food, so they went to the Food Lion and then came home and made spaghetti). The go-karts were fun… I passed Mrs Jones, but then I couldn’t pass Ali and she was in front of me the whole time. It was kind of funny when all of the girls went to get on the karts, because they couldn’t take their purses with them (I’d left my bag with my dad), so Aaron was taking everyone’s things and had a bunch of bags, so people were referring to him as “mom” for a while. It was pretty funny.
Then after go-karts we went home for a while and then left for Outback. That was a pretty good meal and we all had fun there, I think. The pastor from the church and a few other people ended up being seated at a table behind us, so that was kind of funny… he came and said “hi” (and “hallelujah”) and thanked us for what we did at their church and hoped we were having a good time… it was nice. Then after dinner we all went back home to have devotions and to clean and pack… and that took a while, even though Ali and I had cleaned up a lot of our room when we’d been at the houses earlier that day.
After all that, me, Paige S, Ali, Sarah, and JD all walked out to Sonic again to get ice cream. That was a lot of fun and we were all acting like a bunch of idiots… pretending to beat up on each other and running around in circles and stuff. Paige, Sarah, and Ali were all dancing around the tables at Sonic to this weirdified music that they had playing. It was really funny ^_^
Then we went home and Paige and Ali talked on the phone to their families for a while, then me and Ali and Sarah got together to do my interview for the senior video, so that was fun… and then I took a shower. I hadn’t really intended to go to bed yet, but I sort of started falling asleep because I was really tired for some reason… and then Sarah and Amber came in while Ali was in the shower and watched some TV… and we chased this evil fly around until Amber finally got my shoe and killed it (yuck… >.<). I don’t know who all stayed in our room or left after that because I fell asleep and didn’t wake up until Ali woke me up and told me we were supposed to be leaving soon.
Hurried to get ready to go and pack all my belongings that were still lying around, then got on the bus. I was very upset because my dad had bought me 2 Dr Peppers the day before, and I’d left one unopened in the upstairs fridge, and when I went and looked for it, it was gone. So my day didn’t start out too good. Then it got worse on the bus because a lot of people had claimed two seats for themselves so they could sleep a bit and I had to sit crammed into a bench with my dad, my book bag, and my pillow. I was so glad when we stopped at McDonalds later and I got to move my seat because somebody moved out of it. No offence to my dad… but I was really tired and in a bad mood and I wanted my own seat too.
Mr Fox had it worse though, because I guess he finally ate the half of the sub he’d saved and it had gone bad or summat… so he was in the hospital that morning and we had to leave the Foxes and the Waters down there until he could recover.
Then we drove a while and stopped someplace else… and I decided that I wanted to switch my seat again to where I’d been sitting for most of the trip, and don’t remember what I did after that… but I know I think I read some of the interviews in the back of Hitchhiker’s, and that I listened to my headphones a bit and looked out the window. And I know we stopped again sometime, but I don’t really remember when or where.
Then while we were somewhere close to the DC area, I noticed that Paige S was asleep catty-corner from where I was, and that seemed like a good idea to me, so I fell asleep too for a pretty good while… we were almost out of PA when I woke up again. I think lots of us slept for a lot of the trip back… because I think Paige was still kind of sleeping when I woke up again, and Joe was asleep across the aisle from me, and I think Mr Meinhart was asleep too… JD, the driver, and my dad were the only people still awake that I could see without actually sitting back up.
So soon after I woke up we stopped at Wendy’s for dinner and all and got back on the bus… everybody was a lot more chatty after that, I think… and I moved back again to sit with Sarah and talk to people until we got back home… Sarah read part of my story too, and says I have to print it for her to read the rest of it sometime. I’ll do that later.
And then we got back to school and unloaded stuff and said our goodbyes and gave hugs and took pictures and all… and I talked to Lisa for a bit. She said she doesn’t think I should have to make up any work I missed over the trip, and I agree… but we’ll see how that goes tomorrow.
Please pray though… because now that I’m home, I’ve been reading up on some things I’ve missed during the week and it looks like things are going awry for several of my friends. Thank you for praying…
Later days & God bless
